KPIs and metrics: what to actually measure to know if it’s working

If you're measuring likes, followers and reach and calling them results, you're making decisions based on vanity, not data. A real KPI is directly connected to a business goal — not to your ego.

The difference between a vanity metric and a real KPI

A vanity metric looks good but isn't connected to the business. 10,000 followers who will never buy your product is a vanity metric. A KPI is an indicator directly connected to sales, customers or growth.

Ask yourself of every metric: how does this affect my sales, my customers or my growth? If you can't answer that, it's not a KPI.

KPIs by goal

If your goal is reach and awareness:
Unique impressions, organic reach, growth rate of qualified followers, brand mentions. Not the total number but how many new ones actually fit your ideal client.

If your goal is engagement and community:
Real engagement rate, qualitative comments, shares and saves. Saves are especially valuable — they signal real usefulness. One saved post is worth more than a hundred likes.

If your goal is website traffic:
Sessions from social media, bounce rate of social traffic, pages per session, time on page.

As we explain in "Why your SEO isn't working," traffic that arrives with intent converts better than traffic that arrives out of curiosity.

If your goal is lead generation:
Visit-to-lead conversion rate, cost per lead, lead quality, subsequent close rate. Not how many forms get filled in, but how many turn into real customers.

If your goal is direct sales:
ROAS on paid campaigns, customer acquisition cost, customer lifetime value, site conversion rate.

How often to review your KPIs

  • Social media metrics — weekly. Fast-moving data that allows immediate adjustments.
  • SEO and web traffic KPIs — monthly. SEO is a long game.
  • Business KPIs: leads, conversions, revenue — monthly, with a quarterly view.
